The Stranger in My Bed
A man and woman arrive at a Rio de Janeiro police precinct handcuffed and covered in blood. They are ushered past a teeming throng of reporters, curious onlookers, and flashing cameras before being separated into different interrogation rooms. Each will have the chance to tell their side of the same story.
Every relationship has its secrets—some deadlier than others.
Diego and Laura are the perfect couple. Young, good-looking, and well-off, they live in an oceanfront penthouse apartment in Rio de Janeiro. Diego is a highly-respected criminal defense lawyer, and Laura owns a luxury flower shop. But after fifteen years of marriage, their spark has faded. So one Friday night, the couple decides to try something new: they welcome a stranger into their home. And their bed.
But when their guest dies unexpectedly, their night of pleasure quickly turns into a nightmare.
Calling the police is out of the question—Diego comes from a prominent Rio de Janeiro family, and is the heir to one of the largest law firms in the country. They decide to do whatever it takes to cover up their crime and protect their reputation.
However, in this story, nothing is what it seems. It isn’t long before the woman’s body is discovered—and not where Diego and Laura left it. A few days later, an anonymous letter arrives at the couple’s apartment:
I know what you did. And I can prove it.
Someone knows the truth. Someone has been watching them. As the investigation intensifies, each character becomes entangled in a web of scandal, sex, and betrayal. In their statements to the police, Diego and Laura tell different versions of events. Who is telling the truth? Who is manipulating whom?
The Stranger in My Bed is a masterfully constructed thriller about our darkest desires, our most shameful secrets, and the lies we tell to those closest to us.
Alternating between Diego and Laura’s perspectives, the novel steadily dismantles the reader’s assumptions until only one question remains: What really happened that fatal night?
