A Pinch of Salt

Cecil Beaton once declared the teenage Maxime de la Falaise “the only truly chic Englishwoman of her generation.” Later, Andy Warhol christened her “the Factory Mother.”
Maxime lived many lives: apprentice to Schiaparelli in postwar Paris; designer for Paquin, Fath, Chloé, and Saint Laurent; Vogue columnist under Diana Vreeland in New York; cookbook author; actress; muse; aristocrat; bohemian. She moved effortlessly through the worlds of fashion, art, food, and society for more than eight decades, continually reinventing herself while remaining unmistakably herself.
Before her death, Maxime entrusted her grandson, Daniel de La Falaise, with a trunk filled with her journals—a lifetime of observations, stories, recipes, scandals, romances, and reflections. Over the past nine months, Daniel has distilled these writings into A Pinch of Salt: an intimate, vivid, and deeply entertaining portrait of both an extraordinary woman and the century she inhabited.
Spanning prewar England, postwar Paris, and sixties and seventies New York, the book offers a richly textured journey through the social, artistic, and culinary life of the twentieth century. Told in Maxime’s irreverent and irresistible voice—witty, incisive, mischievous, occasionally cruel, but never dull—these stories illuminate a vanished world from the inside.
At its heart, however, A Pinch of Salt is also a grandson’s act of preservation: a conversation across generations, and a testament to the passing of spirit, taste, and memory from one era to the next.
Organised around seven themes—childhood, family, passion, fashion, food, art, and society—the collection can be read chronologically or dipped into at will, like “beads on a thread of narrative,” each story conjuring the silhouette of a life fully and vividly lived.
Part memoir, part cultural history, A Pinch of Salt has the wit of Nora Ephron, the sensual immediacy of Stanley Tucci’s Taste, and the intimate act of rediscovery at the heart of The Hare with Amber Eyes.
