German rights for Schermer’s Debris pre-empted by Kampa Verlag

20/04/2018

German rights for Marijke Schermer’s Debris have been pre-empted by Kampa Verlag. Debris follows Emilia, a statistician, wife and mother who seems to have it all. But when a hidden trauma from her past comes to the surface again, she finds herself struggling to cope.

Debris was originally published by Van Oorschot in 2016 and was shortlisted for the ECI Literary Prize 2017, one of Holland’s most important literary awards.

Cornelia Künne, the acquiring editor, said of Debris:

“We here at Kampa Verlag all agreed instantly – Debris is one of the most compelling books we read in a long time. Marijke simply excels in every aspect of her writing, whether it is psychological depth, dramaturgy, suspense – and most of all drawing absolutely compelling characters, with whom we fell in love with immediately. Such a profound and clever book, not to speak of her brilliance in merging nature’s turmoil with the growing tension of her main character Emilia. The secrets that haunt a marriage, and the real meaning of intimacy are themes anyone who has ever been in a relationship can relate to. We are delighted to bring the book to the German reader.”
